  • "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat."

Mr. Hickey is the current president of the North Orange County Bar Association and is a pioneer in the use of technology in the courtroom.

He has represented thousands of clients charged with crimes in Orange County.  He maintains membership with the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the California Public Defenders Association.  Mr. Hickey is also a member of the California DUI Lawyers Association and the Orange County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

Mr. Hickey uses a proactive approach in his practice of the law. When a client believes he or she is under investigation for a crime, Mr. Hickey works hard to prevent the case from being filed. Using his knowledge of the law and his legal abilities, he is often able to negotiate with the prosecutors who are assigned to his clients' cases in order to negotiate favorable plea offers for his clients or, in some cases, to secure dismissals of the charges.

If Mr. Hickey is unable to secure a favorable plea for his clients, he is unafraid to litigate the matter through motions hearings and jury trial. His representative matters have included drug possession, DUI, domestic violence, assault, homicide, drug manufacturing and sales and vandalism, among others. Mr. Hickey has a good relationship with all of the judges in Orange County as well as the prosecutors, making it easier for him to secure successful outcomes for his clients' cases.

Mr. Hickey has earned an excellent reputation among his clients. He has a perfect 10.0 rating through Avvo. He has been named to the National Trial Lawyers: Top 100 Trial Lawyers list for California and has previously been named as a super lawyer by Super Lawyers. In 2012, Newsweek named him as being a leading criminal defense attorney.

A dedicated lawyer, Mr. Hickey participates in continuing legal education in order to stay current with the latest changes in the law. He also is an active member of multiple legal organizations, including the Orange County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the California DUI Lawyers Association, the California Public Defenders Association, the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the North Orange County Bar Association.

Mr. Hickey understands that juries respond better to digital presentations, as presenting information in this way makes it easier to understand. As such, we are pioneers in using technology in the courtroom in order to tell our clients' stories more effectively.

Mr. Hickey completed his undergraduate degree at Fullerton College in 1992. He went on to pursue his legal education at the Western State University, graduating in 1996 with his Juris Doctor. He is licensed to practice law before all of the courts in California.

If you are being investigated for a crime or have been charged, you will want a strong criminal defense lawyer at your side as you navigate your way through the criminal process. Robert J. Hickey is an excellent choice. He reviews the police reports and evidence held in each case in order to determine what defenses might be available to his clients. He then works to build the defense case, working closely together with his clients in an effort to best help them.

When we meet with you, we will take the time to analyze the information from your case and will then advise you of the approach we think might work for you. We will provide you with an honest assessment of your case and whether or not we think you should seek a plea agreement or fight your case through trial. In some cases, there are constitutional problems with the way in which the police conducted searches, stops or seizures. When we see these issues, we may file evidentiary motions in an effort to get the evidence suppressed. If you are currently facing charges or are being investigated, call Orange County's leading criminal defense firm, and schedule your consultation with criminal defense attorney Robert J. Hickey today.
